Golf Day:
A Charity Golf Day is held each year with
the proceeds being donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of
Australia for research purposes. This event is held in October and each
year one or more AFL players are invited to participate both by playing
in the event and at the post golf celebration and auction. These players
have traditionally been local boys who have made a name for themselves
playing in the national AFL competition. Capacity fields have always
ensured a very successful day with several thousands of dollars donated
each year to this very worthy cause. The 2010 event will be held on Sunday
24th. October 2010 at the Woodrising Golf Club and the major sponsor
again will be
Harvey World Travel. Over 150
players participated last year to make this a very successful event with over
$6000 being donated to prostate cancer research. Please click here for

Breakfast in the Park:
Each year on the last working day prior to Christmas Day the club stages
the annual Breakfast in the Park. This is held at Roundhouse Park,
Victoria Parade on the foreshore of the Mersey River. Members of the
public, both private and corporate citizens are invited to attend this
event for breakfast with the option of bringing their own breakfast or
enjoying a hot breakfast cooked and served by club members. Santa Claus
pays a visit during the morning handing out sweets to guests and various
competitions are held for those attending. Face painting is available
for children and this has proved very popular over the years the event
has been staged. Guests can dress in Christmas attire and there are
prizes for the best dressed person, and also the best decorated table.
This event is growing in popularity each year and patrons look forward
to starting the Christmas celebrations with this event. The 2009
event was held at Roundhouse Park on Thursday 24th December 2009
commencing at 7.00 am. with over 360 people enjoying to morning. Numbers
were down slightly from last year due to the threatening weather which
fortunately held off until after the event concluded.
Tasmanian
Alkaloids
has been the major sponsor for this event for a number of years and the
club is very appreciate of this support.

Rotary Youth Driver Awareness Program (RYDA)
This program targets “awareness” and “attitudinal change” and seeks to
encourage year 10 students, who are on the verge of driving or at least
are actively thinking about it, to take a more responsible attitude to
motoring. Comprising six sessions, it is a one day event held at a
non-school site. The programme co-ordinates the efforts of local road
safety experts, driving instructors, the Police, recovering victims of
road accidents, drug & alcohol educators and financial service personnel
in such a way that students are made aware of the privilege and
responsibilities of owning and driving a motor vehicle.
This programme is for grade 10 secondary school students and was held
this year at Camp Clayton, Turner's Beach from June 15th - 21st 2009.
The program was presented to 13 schools between Latrobe and Burnie over
8 days with a total student attendance of 1028 with 55 supporting
teachers. All 9 Rotary Clubs from Latrobe
to Wynyard were involved in providing group leaders and road marshals
for each day and we had adequate numbers for all but one day. A tent
crew of up to 3 Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Devonport North
erected the shelter tent for the stopping distances demonstrations each
morning and dismantled same each afternoon.
We had most of the same enthusiastic presenters as last year with the
exception of the finance session. Last year's finance presenters
declined to be involved again so we invited Margy Badcock from ANCA
insurance brokers and she successfully presented all 48 sessions.
We also had counsellors on hand from the Road Trauma Support Group
and they were able to help 8 students from the Police sessions. The
programme was also conducted in December 2009 with one day sessions at
Smithton and Queenstown supported by excellent assistance of the local
Rotary Clubs.
Our motto for this programme is "If we can save just one life or serious
injury, the program is worthwhile"
See
website
for more details of national programme.
